CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — As Penn State’s spring break 2016 kicks off next week (March 7 to 11), students from the Lehigh Valley campus will set sail on different excursions to take their learning into the real world and gain experience. Students traveling to Italy and Costa Rica will embark on short-term, course-embedded study abroad experiences, while other students will head to West Virginia to participate in a week of community service.
West Virginia
For the fourth consecutive year, Community Heroes will continue its partnership with West Virginia Ministry of Advocacy and Workcamps (WVMAW) and will be traveling to Webster Springs, West Virginia. Five students will be attending the trip from March 5-11. During the week they will be working on home repairs for a family in need. Working with WVMAW, students find out about their specific project upon arrival.
Costa Rica
Those in attendance on the La Selva, Costa Rica, trip will be traveling from March 3-10. While on the trip, students will have the opportunity to engage in the Costa Rican lifestyle and culture. Students in attendance will immerse themselves for one week in a different culture. While in La Selva, the coordinators have put together different activities and sight-seeing options for the week. Students are encouraged to enjoy this relaxing week and to explore the Costa Rican culture.
Italy
The honors chapter at Penn State Lehigh Valley will be going to Rome, Italy, for the duration of spring break. Those in attendance will be traveling from March 3-10. While in Italy, students will be expanding their knowledge with an honors arts history class. In this course, they will delve into the history of Italian Renaissance art. They will be exploring the development of art during this time, while considering the values and perspectives of the people. This embedded course allows students an incredible opportunity to prepare for and engage in international study through engaged coursework. They will immerse themselves in the art and innovations of the Italian Renaissance.
