Penn State professor promoted to editor-in-chief of Sleep Health journal

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Orfeu Buxton, professor of biobehavioral health and Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) co-funded faculty member at Penn State, was recently named the next editor-in-chief for the journal of the National Sleep Foundation, Sleep Health.

Buxton was promoted after serving as an associate editor of the publication since 2015, the year Sleep Health was founded. His four-year term as editor-in-chief will begin in October of this year.

As a Penn State researcher, Buxton studies the causes of chronic sleep deficiency in the workplace, home and society, and the health consequences of chronic sleep deficiency. Additionally, he is the director of Penn State’s Sleep, Health, and Society Collaboratory

Outside of the Penn State community, Buxton is affiliated with the internal advisory board for the Harvard School of Public Health Center for Work, Health and Well-being and an interdisciplinary team of researchers within the Work, Family and Health Network.

He is a lecturer on medicine in the Harvard Medical School’s Division of Sleep Medicine and an adjunct professor for Harvard School of Public Health’s Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. He also serves as an associate neuroscientist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Department of Medicine.

Buxton’s work aligns well with the focus of the journal, which provides evidence-based research in hopes of improving sleep health globally. Including studies from many different fields, Sleep Health approaches sleep-related issues from a diversified angle, creating an innovative and unique publication.

“I am honored to be named the next editor-in-chief of Sleep Health,” Buxton said. “I look forward to engaging with the multi-disciplinary community of authors, editors, reviewers, readers and the press to advance the journal, and, in effect, improve the public’s sleep health.”
