UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Thirteen Penn State PGA Golf Management (PGM) students will gain firsthand experience in their field of study while working at the 2018 Masters Tournament.

Students will be working at the tournament in Augusta, Georgia, from March 29 to April 9. They will be working as part of the professional staff at Augusta National Golf Club during the event.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students, who are future leaders in professional golf management, to gain hands-on experience at the Masters,” said Penn State PGA Golf Management Director Burch Wilkes. “We are extremely appreciative to the Augusta National Golf Club for allowing our students to work and learn during one of the most popular golf tournaments in the world.”

Students will utilize the diverse skills they have been cultivating at Penn State and gain additional experience in customer service, interpersonal skills, merchandise sales, tournament management and practice facility management.

J.J. Weaver, golf professional at Augusta National Golf Club, is a 1999 graduate of the Penn State PGM program and helped create the initial partnership with Penn State students for the Masters Tournament. In 2008, Weaver established the opportunity for two students to work at the tournament practice range. This same opportunity exists today, and Penn State PGM students have had a history of success in this role.

Over recent history, the need for additional support staff has increased. Charlie Schuyler, senior assistant golf professional at Augusta National Golf Club, is a 2005 graduate of the Penn State PGM program and currently manages the hiring process for all support staff within the golf operation. In addition to the practice areas, students gain work experience within the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, Berkmans Place Masters putting experiences, and within the Masters merchandise department.
