Penn State Wilkes-Barre professor presents research in England

Theodora Jankowski, professor of English and director of Academic Affairs at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, traveled to England over the summer to present two papers on her research.

The first presentation, "'Nature, Re[a]d in Tooth and Claw’: Animals on the Early Modern Stage,” examined the use of metaphorical and “actual” animals in key Shakespearean pieces and other plays of that period. This presentation at the International Medieval Conference at the University of Leeds was part of a panel that celebrated the sesquicentennial of Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species.

Jankowski presented her second paper, “‘My beloved is mine and I am (fill in the blank)’: Queer Desire in the 1560 Geneva Bible’s ‘Song of Songs,’” at the Biennial Conference of the Society for Renaissance Studies at the University of York. This paper is part of a longer work focusing on the problems of gender-marking inherent in translating the Geneva Bible from Hebrew to English.
