Several internal deadlines approaching for major undergraduate fellowships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The yearly cycle is in full swing for major fellowships, with many internal Penn State deadlines coming up in the last three months of 2020. Undergraduate Research and Fellowships Mentoring (URFM) handles the application and selection of candidates for the following awards and will help students with applications.

An information webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 28, and will cover applying to the Boren Awards, Critical Language Scholarship and Fulbright U.S. Student Program (for the 2022-23 cycle).

Goldwater Scholarship

Pre-applications are required for some awards and the Goldwater Scholarship will be among the first due on Oct. 27. The Goldwater program seeks out U.S. sophomore and junior undergraduate students studying the fields of natural science, engineering and mathematics and demonstrate research excellence. The final URFM office deadline for Goldwater will be Nov. 27.

Truman Scholarship

The Truman Scholarship pre-application is due to URFM by Nov. 4, with a final office deadline of Dec. 4. This scholarship provides a $30,000 award for U.S. junior undergraduate students to continue education in public service and become what the foundation calls “change agents.”

Udall Scholarship

The Udall Scholarship pre-application will be due to URFM on Dec. 15 and a final office application due on Jan. 15. The scholarship is open to sophomores and juniors who are Native Americans or Alaska Natives working on tribal policy issues or pursuing health-related careers, or for any sophomores and juniors interested in conservation and environmental issues.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship office deadline for international students is Nov. 2. The scholarship was founded in 2001 by a gift from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge and allows for outstanding academic achievers from around the world to study at the university.

Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship provides U.S. undergraduate and graduate students the chance to immerse themselves in a different culture for 8 to 10 weeks during the summer while they study one of 15 languages deemed critical to the U.S. State Department. The deadline to apply is Nov. 17.

Boren Awards

Both the Boren Scholarship (undergraduates) and Boren Fellowship (graduates) are funded by the National Security Education Program and provide for long-term linguistic and cultural immersion. The URFM office deadline for the Boren Scholarship is Dec. 4, and the office deadline for the Boren Fellowship is Jan. 11, 2021.
