UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Ronald E. Sloan, a 1970 Penn State Smeal College of Business accounting graduate, has been named the 2015-16 Accounting Alumnus of the Year.
“Ron has been a consistent tremendous asset for the department and Smeal,” said Steven Huddart, chair of the Department of Accounting.
“Since joining the Accounting Department’s External Advisory Board in 2012, he has been active in promoting careers in corporate, as opposed to public, accounting. This led to the creation of the Corporate Control and Analysis Certificate program within the undergraduate major. The first students in the program will graduate in May. Ron has helped Smeal get corporate leaders, recruiters, and students excited about this new educational initiative.”
Sloan spent 41 years working in steel, oil, agricultural chemicals, commercial real estate and joint ventures. He is retired from the United States Steel Corporation. Since retiring, Sloan has served as a consultant and executive coach, including an assignment with Massaro Corporation of Pittsburgh.
Sloan advances the accounting program by talking to recruiters and corporations, as well as speaking to students. He received the Smeal Outstanding Volunteer Award this year for outstanding service to the Smeal Alumni Society.
He will receive his award at the Beta Alpha Psi banquet on April 13, where he will also offer his remarks and insights.
The Accounting Alumnus of the Year award is the highest award given by the department. The award recognizes outstanding career accomplishments and service to the department and college.
