Smeal students form consulting organization

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A new Penn State student club is recruiting business students. The Nittany Consulting Group (NCG), founded by Smeal College of Business finance majors Chris Marthers and Noor Nahavandi, is a student group that will provide education on consulting careers as well as opportunities for professional experience.

“Consulting is an attractive career option because, as a consultant, you’re making fundamental changes from the start, solving problems that businesses aren’t able to solve on their own,” said Nahavandi.

Ryan Saba, an accounting major who joined the founders on the executive board this summer, added, “Consulting is an exciting field. You travel to a lot of new places and spend time thinking critically about problems and how to solve them.”

The group also wants to be a resource to connect students with and prepare them to participate in business case competitions.

The group’s first meeting will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 4 in 105 Business Building. Representatives from PricewaterhouseCoopers will be on hand to talk about consulting careers. An event with Deloitte is planned for later in the month.

“We want to be a group companies can connect with to recruit students," said Nahavandi.

The NCG is seeking all students with an interest in consulting or students with great critical thinking skills who want to take on a real-world consulting project this semester. There are no dues to pay for the first semester. Visit members of the group at the Smeal involvement fair or learn more at www.ncgpsu.com, where you can sign up for their mailing list and be notified of upcoming events.

The Smeal involvement fair, held this fall from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3, also features a number of other ways to get involved. There are more than 35 active student organizations within Smeal to help you learn more about your field of study and provide you with opportunities for developing leadership skills.

“Getting involved in a student organization is a great way to complement your classroom experience at Penn State and enhance your skills in demonstrable ways,” said Student Organization Manager Bill Lippert. “Recruiters often tell us how important it is for them to see student organization involvement on a resume.”
