UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State student work earned six first-place finishes, including Best All-Around Television News Magazine, in the 2018 Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Region 1 Mark of Excellence Awards.
The awards honor the best of collegiate journalism from the year and include categories for newspapers, magazines, art/graphics, radio, television, online and videography. The winners advance for consideration in the national competition, which includes winning entries from all 12 SPJ regions.

- Television General News Reporting: “Helicopter Wreaks Havoc on Tailgate” – Brandon Pelter
- Best All-Around Television News Magazine: “Centre County Report in Israel” – Centre County Report Staff
- Online/Digital News Videography: “Breaking it Down: Partisan Gerrymandering” – Katie Litwin
Based on enrollment, Penn State competed in the large-school division against other programs with at least 10,000 students. Region 1 includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Central and Eastern Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.
The winners of the national competition will be notified in the late spring and will be recognized at the Excellence in Journalism conference scheduled for Sept. 5-7 in San Antonio.
