World Campus student organization earns national Merit Award

Student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management will be recognized in June at national conference

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State World Campus chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management has been awarded the Merit Award for excellence and achievement during the 2017-2018 academic year. The chapter will be recognized at the SHRM annual conference and exposition in Chicago, Illinois, June 17 to 20.

"We are thrilled with the news that our chapter has earned the SHRM chapter Merit Award for 2017," said Chapter President Janette Hunt, who is majoring in labor and employment relations. "As a new chapter, our main goals were to establish a meaningful network for our virtual labor and employment relations and human resources and employment relations student members.

"While our chapter is a Penn State World Campus student organization, we are also a recognized SHRM student chapter. As such, we pursued our goals by following an operating plan designed to ensure that each activity was meaningful to our Penn State World Campus LER/HRER (labor and employment relations and human resources and employment relations) students and was SHRM merit worthy. We are excited to build on the success of the first year and to continue to bring value to our virtual community."

The merit award program began in 1972 and was created to encourage campus chapters to maintain successful enrollments, chapter operations, chapter programming and give professional development support to chapter members. SHRM campus chapters earn awards based on the number of activities they host and encourage members to attend.

The Penn State World Campus chapter worked tirelessly to make its first year as a University organization a success and has begun to plan for 2018-19 academic year activities. Established in the spring of 2017, the chapter has members from across the country who are interested in all aspects of the human resource experience, including training and staffing, employment and labor law, organizational training and ethics and employee relations.

The virtual chapter meets online in video conferences to plan and discuss upcoming events for the chapter, as well as provide an opportunity for World Campus students to meet fellow classmates who are studying within the School of Labor and Employment Relations.

The Society for Human Resource Management is the world’s largest human resources professional organization, representing more than 280,000 members in more than 165 countries. For more than 70 years, the organization has been serving the needs of human resource professionals and advancing the practice of human resource management.
