UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Board of Trustees committees met Sept. 15 at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, taking action on a number of recommendations and receiving several reports.
Committee recommends 2017-18 budget plan
The Penn State Board of Trustees Committee on Finance, Business and Capital Planning recommended for approval a 2017-18 budget request that seeks a $25.3 million increase from the state in the University’s Education and General appropriation, for a total of $350.5 million in support.
If the Commonwealth provides the requested appropriation, the University budget plan would include no increase in base tuition for Pennsylvania resident undergraduate students for the second time in three years. The plan also includes a $2 million increase for need-based student aid.
Trustees hear overview of tenure review process
Tenured and tenure-track positions make up 47.5 percent of Penn State faculty, according to Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Blannie Bowen.
Bowen reviewed statistical information about Penn State’s faculty along with the University’s tenure policies and procedures at the Board of Trustees Committee on Academic Affairs and Student Life.
Trustees hear financial update on Intercollegiate Athletics
A review of Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics organization, various measures of institutional control, peer institution benchmarking, and five-year historical and five-year prospective financials were presented by Sandy Barbour, director of Intercollegiate Athletics, and Rick Kaluza, senior associate athletic director for finance and business operations.
Committee advances two former trustees for emeritus status consideration
Keith W. Eckel and Alvin H. Clemens, both former members of the Penn State Board of Trustees, were recommended for the position of trustee emeritus at a meeting of the Committee on Governance and Long-Range Planning. The recommendations require the approval of the full board at its meeting on Sept. 16.
Blue & White Society, Lion Ambassador keep tradition and spirit alive
Two representatives from Penn State Alumni Association student organizations that focus on engaging future alumni offered insight into their groups during a presentation to the Penn State Board of Trustees’ Outreach, Development and Community Relations Committee.
The full Board of Trustees will meet on Friday, Sept. 16. The meeting will be streamed live on WPSU at http://wpsu.org/trustees.
