Breastfeeding classes are now available through Zoom

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — To help expecting mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic, prenatal classes that are being offered monthly through Penn State Human Resource’s Breastfeeding Support Program are now available to faculty, staff and students through Zoom. If Penn State extends the mandate for remote learning beyond June, future classes will be transitioned online.

Register now to sign up for the upcoming classes, beginning Saturday, May 2, or look ahead to those classes scheduled through December 2020.

Taking a prenatal class is a great way for an expecting mother to decrease their anxiety when worried about what to expect with breastfeeding their child. The classes, listed below, are taught by an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). All information provided is supported by the latest research, while the IBCLC also draws on her own experience from working with mothers and babies for over the past 20 years.

PSU-140, Basics of Breastfeeding
Information shared in this class covers information expecting mothers need to prepare for breastfeeding during the early weeks after delivery. Topics may include: establishing milk supply, positioning and latch, how to tell if baby is getting enough milk, and normal newborn behavior.

PSU-141 Working and Breastfeeding
This class covers information for expecting mothers as it relates to combining work/student life and breastfeeding. Topics may include: milk expression and storage, bottle feeding a breastfed baby, and planning for return to work or class. Each class is offered for a nominal fee for all expectant parents and can be taken separately or back-to-back, depending on your schedule.
