Capital plan to focus on facility renewal

University Park, Pa. — Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (Sept. 11) received an update on the University's capital plan, which will focus strongly on renewal of existing facilities. The updated plan will guide construction at University campuses for the next four years through 2013.

The plan was presented to the board in 2007. During the next two years, the University will make significant investments in capital renewal and infrastructure as well as a new classroom and laboratory at Penn State Berks and additions and renovations to the Henderson and Moore Buildings at University Park, said Al Horvath, senior vice president for Finance and Business.

For the next two years, 2012-13, in addition to continued work on capital renewal and the Henderson Building, the University plans to begin work on replacing outdated research and teaching greenhouses along with a replacement for Fenske Lab, a chemical engineering building.

A phased renovation of South Halls at University Park is expected to begin within the next four years.  Items in the Housing and Food Services capital plan that have already been completed include the installation of sprinkler systems in every Penn State residence hall, the conversion of Beam Hall at University Park back to a residence hall and the start of construction on a 100-bed residence space at Penn State Harrisburg

At Penn State Hershey, plans continue to construct a new Children's Hospital as part of the campus' capital plan through 2013.

The capital plan for Intercollegiate Athletics is modest, with construction of a new softball facility expected to begin in 2010 and continued investments in maintenance of Beaver Stadium.

The plan through the next four years includes projects totaling $820 million.
