As end of the year approaches, employees encouraged to opt out of paper W-2

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — As the end of 2022 draws closer, the Penn State Payroll Office encourages faculty, staff and students to begin preparing for tax season by opting out of being mailed a paper copy of their W-2 form.

Each year, over 55,000 electronic W-2s are uploaded into Workday. Delivering these W-2s electronically helps the University advance sustainability goals that are a key component of Penn State's Strategic Plan and supports the University’s efforts to reduce the general funds deficit and work toward a balanced budget. For employees, electronic W-2s secure each employee's personal information and reduce the risk of a paper W-2 being lost in the mail.

An important benefit to opting out of the paper copy of the W-2: Employees who do so will have access to their year-end W-2 form several weeks earlier than those receiving a mailed copy.

For those who haven’t already done so, the Payroll Office highly recommends all employees opt out of a paper copy of their W-2 in Workday by Dec. 22. For more information, the article, "Choosing your W-2 Election Method in Workday: Print/Electronic," can help guide employees through the process of selecting the electronic W-2 only.

Questions about this process can be submitted through the WorkLion Portal or by phone at 814-865-1473.
