Federal student loan payment pause extended through May 1

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — On Dec. 22, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education extended the federal student loan payment pause through May 1, 2022. The payment pause, which was enacted in March 2020 as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, was set to expire on Jan. 31, 2022.  

The pause includes the following relief measures for eligible loans

  • Suspension of loan payments. 
  • 0% interest rate, including for in-school borrowers. 
  • Stopped collections on defaulted loans.
