HR announces new director of compensation and benefits

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Gregory D. Stoner has been named senior director of compensation and benefits for Penn State’s Office of Human Resources, effective Sept. 14. 

Stoner, who earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Penn State, has more than 25 years of experience in employee benefits programs and human capital strategies focused on total compensation and population health.

Prior to joining Penn State, Stoner was the director of the Medical Consulting Practice of Sagewell Partners, where he was responsible for introducing to clients new and innovative ideas affecting the design and delivery of medical programs. Previously, Stoner served as senior director of Workplace Population Health with UPMC WorkPartners, which provides health and productivity solutions to high-performing companies throughout the United States. 

“During more than two decades in the healthcare and financial services fields, Greg helped the companies he worked for lower medical costs and positively impact the bottom line while increasing employee engagement in health management programs,” said Susan M. Basso, vice president of Human Resources. “We’re pleased to welcome an individual with the proven ability to build innovative total compensation strategies, effectively manage programs, and continually monitor and control benefits costs for our faculty and staff.”  

Stoner held HR leadership and benefits strategy roles for more than 15 years in healthcare at UPMC, and four years in financial services, including as vice president of HR Support Services with PNC Financial Services Group. He began his career in actuarial services, benefits consulting and third party benefits administration. In addition to his Penn State degree, he earned a Master of Business Administration from Duquesne University.
