Mechanical engineering alumnus Shuman pledges $1 million gift

University Park, Pa. – Penn State mechanical engineering alumnus Clyde Shuman and his wife, Nancy, of Allentown, have pledged $1 million to the University's Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering to support students, faculty and programs.

Part of their gift will endow the Shuman Family Early Career Professorship. These professorships provide crucial support for young faculty in the first 10 years of their academic careers by providing seed money for research and teaching projects.

The remainder of the Shumans’ gift will fund strategic initiatives to advance engineering education, provide resources for faculty and enhance the student experience.

“I want to impact the quantity and quality of engineers in Pennsylvania, and in the current economy, I know it is needed,” said Clyde Shuman, who received his bachelor’s degree in 1968.

Department Head Karen Thole said, “Securing a gift of this size is truly a humbling experience in terms of the commitment from our alumni.”

The Shumans have been among the strongest supporters of the mechanical and nuclear engineering department. The couple’s previous gifts include creation of the Clyde W. Shuman Family Program Support Endowment, which helps to support academic excellence in engineering education, and the Clyde W. Shuman Jr. Family Trustee Scholarship in Engineering, which assists mechanical engineering students who have financial need.

Clyde Shuman is the co-founder and CEO of Precision Medical, an Allentown-area company focused on respiratory health products for hospitals and home care. Since Precision Medical’s inception 25 years ago, it has become a major player in the respiratory health device market.

Shuman’s son, Aaron, earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Penn State and is employed at Precision Medical.
