Prescribed burn planned at Arboretum on March 29

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Arboretum at Penn State will conduct a prescribed burn at the chestnut orchard from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 29.

The burn site is located at Rocky Top Lane. The prescribed burn is being conducted to eliminate small hybrid chestnut stems that have succumbed to chestnut blight. This reduces the amount of the fungus Cryphonectria parasitica that causes chestnut blight.

The burn will be conducted in accordance with the Pennsylvania Prescribed Burning Practices Act and associated prescribed fire standards. Questions may be sent to Stephen Hoy, chestnut orchard manager, at sdh177@psu.edu or by phone at 814-424-0022.
