ALTOONA, Pa. — Penn State Altoona nursing major Alexis Christoff recently received a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students from UPMC Altoona in recognition of the compassion and care she offered to a recovering patient.

Sponsored by the DAISY Foundation, an international recognition program, the award honors and celebrates nursing students for above and beyond care and compassion shown to patients and their families.

UPMC Altoona has hosted Penn State Altoona nursing students for clinical experiences for nearly 30 years and began recognizing students with DAISY Awards in fall 2023. Christoff is one of the first three students to receive the award at UPMC Altoona.

Christoff says it was an honor to receive the DAISY Award and believes advocating for patients is of utmost importance. “It’s one of the most vital things that you can do to make a change in patient care and health," she said.

Christoff will graduate with a bachelor of science in nursing, a certificate in nursing informatics and a minor in human development and family studies this spring. She plans to become a labor and delivery nurse and eventually a nurse midwife and women’s health and nurse practitioner.
