UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Jim Stengel, a globally recognized marketing leader and longtime champion of purpose-driven business, was inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame at the annual Induction Gala in New York City on April 23, recognizing a career that has helped shape modern advertising — as well as a legacy of generosity that has made a lasting impact at Penn State.

Stengel earned his MBA from Penn State’s Smeal College of Business in 1983. His induction recognizes both his professional achievements and his enduring commitment to giving back — highlighting not only his record of success in business, but also his role in strengthening communities, including at the University, said Rachel Pell, vice president for strategic communications at Penn State.

“This honor is richly deserved — a fitting recognition of a career that has not only built and transformed some of the world’s most influential brands but has elevated the very practice of advertising and marketing through a relentless focus on strategy, insight, and enduring impact,” Pell said. “We are deeply proud to call Jim a Penn State alum and offer our sincere congratulations on this remarkable accomplishment.”

The Advertising Hall of Fame, administered by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), honors industry legends for their globally recognized achievements, groundbreaking innovations and exceptional philanthropic contributions to both the advertising industry and their communities.

Stengel, the former global marketing officer of Procter & Gamble and current author, coach and host of the CMO Podcast, was honored for his transformative leadership during his tenure at P&G, where he helped oversee one of the most significant periods of growth in the company’s history. Widely recognized for advancing the idea that brands should serve a higher purpose, Stengel has influenced a generation of marketers through his work, writing and speaking.

“This journey to the Hall of Fame began at Penn State," Stengel said. "I discovered my career direction — and frankly my life direction — while earning my MBA at Smeal. If not for Penn State, I would not have landed at Procter & Gamble, nor would I have met my soulmate, my wife.”

Stengel has remained deeply connected to Penn State. Alongside his wife, Kathleen, who earned her MBA from the University in 1984, and the broader Stengel family, he has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to advancing the University’s mission through philanthropy and engagement.

The Stengel family’s generosity has extended to multiple areas across the University, supporting initiatives that enhance student experiences and academic excellence. They have been especially supportive of the Penn State Alumni Association, helping to strengthen programs that foster connection, professional development, and lifelong engagement among Penn Staters, said Tom Hammond, executive director of engagement for the Alumni Association.

“Beyond his extraordinary professional achievements, Jim’s generosity and continued engagement have created lasting opportunities for Penn State alumni, strengthening connections and elevating our community,” Hammond said. “We are incredibly proud to celebrate this milestone and grateful for the many ways Jim and Kathleen continue to give back.”

Stengel has provided tremendous support for the annual Alumni Leadership Conference, which brings together Penn State alumni volunteers from across the country for leadership training and development, and frequently helps host the conference so he can offer training, insights and inspiration directly to volunteer leaders.

Throughout his career, Stengel has often pointed to Penn State as a foundational influence, crediting the University with helping to instill the curiosity, work ethic and sense of purpose that have defined his leadership. In 2008, Stengel was named a Penn State Alumni Fellow, the highest recognition offered by the Alumni Association.
