College of Arts and Architecture celebrating 60 years with 'Happy Happy Joy Joy'

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — An anniversary is a happy occasion, and the College of Arts and Architecture is celebrating its 60th with a Penn State Berkey Creamery flavor sponsorship. “60 Years of Arts and Architecture: Happy Happy Joy Joy” is available for purchase in September and October.

“Happy Happy Joy Joy” is coconut-flavored ice cream with butter-roasted almonds and chocolate chips. The creamery’s website contains a complete ingredient list and allergen information.

The flavor is available for scoop purchases in the Berkey Creamery’s retail store through Oct. 31. Half-gallons featuring a label with College of Arts and Architecture branding are available for purchase online or in the store.

The renaming of the ice cream flavor is a highlight of the College of Arts and Architecture’s 60th anniversary celebration during the 2023-24 academic year. During the year the college also will publish special social media features and a series of stories highlighting people and places throughout the college’s six-decade history.

“While we are celebrating the college’s 60th anniversary this year, education in the arts and design at Penn State actually goes back well before 1963, to the late 1800s,” noted B. Stephen Carpenter II, Michael J. and Aimee Rusinko Kakos Dean in the College of Arts and Architecture. “As an Arts and Architecture alumnus myself, I am proud to be part of the history of this college, which has long elevated the visual, design and performing arts at Penn State, in the community and beyond. I hope the Penn State community will join us in our 60th anniversary celebration by grabbing a scoop of ‘Happy Happy Joy Joy.’”

The College of Arts and Architecture’s administrative home is the Borland Building, notable as the location of Penn State’s creamery until 2006. Prior to Borland, the creamery was located in Patterson Building, which now houses the college’s School of Visual Arts.

“We share some fun history, so it’s particularly exciting to team with the Berkey Creamery in offering this flavor,” said Carpenter. “The College of Arts and Architecture has brought happiness and joy to audiences of all ages through its performances, exhibitions and outreach events, so ‘Happy Happy Joy Joy’ is a fitting flavor for us to rename.”

When the college was formed in 1963, it united the School of Fine and Applied Arts with the Architecture and Landscape Architecture programs. Since then, it has grown to include eight academic units: the departments of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Graphic Design, housed in the Stuckeman School; the Department of Art History; the School of Music; the School of Theatre; the School of Visual Arts; and the Integrative Arts program.

The college includes the Center for the Performing Arts and the Palmer Museum Art, whose new facility at the Arboretum is scheduled to open in spring 2024. The college also is the administrative home to the Penn State Blue Band.
