Olson named Arts and Architecture facilities manager

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Matt Olson, who served as the Penn State School of Visual Arts (SoVA) shop supervisor for 10 years, has been named facilities manager for the College of Arts and Architecture, effective July 1. With bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sculpture and longtime experience as the safety officer and building coordinator for SoVA, he brings a diverse background in facilities, fabrication and project management to his new role.

Olson spent two years as shop technician before becoming supervisor in 2013. As supervisor, he oversaw all aspects of SoVA’s woodworking and metalworking facilities, which are used by 400 students. He also served as SoVA building coordinator and safety officer, positions that gave him experience in managing facility operations, maintenance and upgrades and developing and implementing safety protocols. In his additional role as fabricator/project manager, Olson designed, fabricated and handled the logistics for many projects for SoVA and the college, ranging from studio and classroom tables to custom multimedia projector holders.

According to Olson, creating an environment where people feel safe is essential, because it allows for the sharing of thoughts and ideas, as well as the transfer of knowledge.

“Whether it’s in the classroom, studio, the shop or an individual’s private office, I’ve striven to promote a culture of respect and inclusion that values the experiences and perspectives of those involved,” said Olson. “I’m excited about the prospect of working with more people within the college and eager to expand my impact by engaging with a greater diversity of people throughout the University.”

A native of Minnesota, Olson spent several years working as a union laborer in fields including underground utilities, masonry and welding before enrolling at Minnesota State University at Mankato, where he earned bachelor of fine arts and master's degrees in sculpture. He later earned his master of fine arts in sculpture at Penn State. As an assistant teaching professor at the University, he taught courses in sculpture and 3D foundations. Olson has served as faculty sponsor and logistics coordinator for several bachelor of fine arts degree students.

Olson’s specialties include woodworking, metalworking, mixed-media fabrication and welding. His sculptural work has been exhibited locally and nationally.
