UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The research units housed in the Penn State College of Architecture’s Stuckeman School — the Stuckeman Center for Design Computing (SCDC), the Hamer Center for Community Design and the Ecology plus Design (E+D) initiative — are hosting a series of six lectures during the 2022-23 academic year to highlight the research work that’s being done within the school.

The first session on Sept. 7 will be a 'PechaKucha' with the current graduate student researchers showcasing their work. PechaKucha is a storytelling format where a presenter typically shows 20 slides for 20 seconds of commentary each for a total of six minutes and 40 seconds. The format, which will be accelerated to allow time for all students to present their research, enables designers to meet, show their work and exchange ideas.

“The lecture series includes speakers from the SCDC, the Hamer Center and E+D, which are affiliated with the Stuckeman School's three departments of architecture, graphic design and landscape architecture,” said José Pinto Duarte, director of the SCDC and Stuckeman Chair in Design Innovation. “The lectures support the SCDC mission of using digital technology to promote an inclusive and sustainable built environment.”

Each of the talks will be held at 12 p.m. in the Stuckeman Family Building Jury Space and via Zoom.

The remaining schedule for the lecture series is as follows:

  • Oct. 5: Charles Andrew (“Andy”) Cole, director of the E+D research initiative and professor of landscape architecture and ecology
  • Nov. 2: Hong Wu, associate professor of landscape architecture and Hamer Center affiliate researcher, and Mahsa Adib, second-year architecture doctoral student focusing on landscape architecture and Hamer Center researcher
  • Feb. 1: Alec Spangler, assistant professor of landscape architecture and Hamer Center affiliate researcher
  • March 1: Nasim Motalebi, informatics doctoral student in the College of Information Sciences and Technology and SCDC researcher
  • April 5: Alexandra Staub, professor of architecture and Hamer Center affiliate researcher, and Sana Ahrar, second-year architecture doctoral candidate and Hamer Center researcher
