UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State School of Music will present three choir concerts on Sunday, Nov. 17, in the Recital Hall on the University Park campus. Featuring world premieres, folk traditions and themes of community and aspiration, these concerts will make for a lovely Sunday afternoon of music for audiences of all ages.
University Choir
Sunday, Nov. 17, 1:30 p.m.
Under the direction of Dr. Bryan Nichols, the University Choir’s Fall Concert will spotlight two world premieres: one piece commissioned through the School of Music’s K12 composer commissioning program and another collaborative work from the joint project with Wildflower Composers, a Philadelphia-based group supporting female and non-binary composers. The program also includes a range of choral works from Mendelssohn to Moses Hogan, as well as compositions from Latvia, the United States, and South Africa. This diverse repertoire celebrates both classic and contemporary choral music with a global perspective.
Oriana Singers
Sunday, Nov. 17, 4 p.m.
Directed by Kathryn Hylton, the Oriana Singers will explore the depth of human connection through an array of pieces inspired by folk tunes, lullabies, sacred music, and love songs. This thoughtful program includes works by composers such as Veljo Tormis, Cecilia McDowall, Jussi Chydenius, Stacy V. Gibbs and Dale Trumbore, among others, creating an intimate and reflective concert experience.
Concert Choir: “Between Earth and Sky”
Sunday, Nov. 17, 6:30 p.m.
Christopher Kiver leads the Concert Choir in “Between Earth and Sky,” an evocative program that meditates on themes of place, community, and the environment. Featuring music by Alex Berko, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Vivian Fung, Shara Nova, Sarah Hopkins and Ysaye Barnwell, this concert will also include special lighting effects and imaginative staging to enhance the performance.
