UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Student Programming Association (SPA) is excited to announce that Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness, Nyle DiMarco, Young Rising Suns, and City of the Sun will round out the 2017 and second annual SPA Day, on Jan. 27.
Created as a way of promoting SPA's efforts to bring diverse talents and acts to Penn State students, SPA Day will highlight and feature performances by all programming arms of the organization (LateNight, Entertainment, Lectures, Noontime, and Edventures committees) in a one-day event. In addition SPA will celebrate its 10th anniversary with the unveiling of its new logo.
City of the Sun will kick things off at noon downstairs in the new addition of the HUB-Robeson Center. Known as an instrumental post-rock trio based out of Brooklyn, New York, City of the Sun features guitarists John Pita, Avi Snow, and percussionist Zach Para. Gaining initial popularity in New York City by playing the streets and subways, the group graduated to selling out major New York venues and attending music festivals like SXSW and Firefly.
The SPA Edventures committee will continue the lineup of events with CrafTEA Time at 2 p.m. in Room 134 of the HUB-Robeson Center. Students can watch a tea brewing demonstration, paint their own art to take home and enjoy free tea and coffee.
At 7 p.m. in the HUB-Robeson Center’s Heritage Hall, Nyle DiMarco, known for his rise to prominence as the winner of "America’s Next Top Model" in its 22nd Season, and the 22nd cycle of "Dancing With the Stars," will take the stage. Born into a multigenerational Deaf family, DiMarco has been seen as an inspiration within the Deaf Community through his work as a model, actor and activist.
The Young Rising Suns, an anthemic alt-rock group from Red Bank, New Jersey, fueled by a fierce chemistry and brother-like camaraderie, will open for Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness at 10 p.m. in the HUB-Robeson Center’s Alumni Hall. The group is best known for their debut single “High.”
Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness will end SPA Day festivities, performing directly after the Young Rising Suns in the HUB-Robeson Center’s Alumni Hall. Andrew McMahon, of Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin fame, has reinvented himself as Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness and has seen the biggest success of his 16-year career with hit single, “Cecilia and the Satellite.” Aside from his professional successes, McMahon is a 10-year survivor of leukemia and founder of the Dear Jack Foundation, one of the first Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) specific cancer foundations which advocates for and supports initiatives that benefit AYAs diagnosed with cancer.
All SPA Day events are free to the Penn State student body with a valid Penn State ID.
