New ‘Sound of Music’ touring Broadway production coming to Penn State Nov. 14–15

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A new production of “The Sound of Music,” produced by NETworks Presentations, will make its Penn State debut at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 14–15, in Eisenhower Auditorium.

“The Sound of Music” features music by Richard Rodgers; lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II; and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, suggested by “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp. The beloved musical story of Maria and the von Trapp Family will thrill audiences with its Tony-, Grammy- and Academy Award-winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss” and the title song.

“The Sound of Music” enjoyed success as a television production when “The Sound of Music Live!,” seen by more than 44 million people, aired on NBC in December 2013. The film version, which marked its 50th anniversary in 2015, continues to be one of the most successful movie musicals in history.

The creative team for this new production includes direction by Matt Lenz, based on the national tour’s original direction by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien (“Hairspray,” “The Full Monty,” “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “The Coast of Utopia”). Original choreography by Danny Mefford (“Dear Evan Hansen,” “Fun Home,” “The Bridges of Madison County” and “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson”) has been recreated by Jonathan Warren, with music supervision by Andy Einhorn (“Bullets Over Broadway,” “Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella” and “The Light in the Piazza”).
