Next on 'Digging Deeper': 3D printing and Penn State's use of the technology

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State President Eric Barron and University guests will talk about the advances that have been made in 3D printing, how it can be used to make a difference in people's lives, and what Penn State is doing with the technology during the next episode of WPSU’s “Digging Deeper” on Sunday, April 18.

Barron will welcome Nicole Cingolani, media commons coordinator for Penn State Teaching and Learning with Technology; John Gershenson, director of the Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship Program in the College of Engineering; and Ryan Wetzel, manager of creative learning initiatives for TLT, for the show.

WPSU’s “Digging Deeper: 3D printing” will air at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on WPSU-TV and can be streamed on live.wpsu.org. WPSU is a Penn State Outreach service.

Wetzel said that 3D printing gives students the opportunity to improve their skill sets and digital fluency.

“We want to inspire our students, not just to sort of understand how to pull in new knowledge and expand their own sort of library of tools that they have, but also contribute back and create new knowledge in these spaces,” he said. “If you understand prototyping and building out and exploring these concepts with 3D printing, then these skill sets continue to grow, and you become a more digitally fluent 21st-century citizen.”

WPSU’s “Digging Deeper” explores how work being done at the University impacts the broader community. Penn State senior Rhea Jha serves as co-host and rounds out each episode by asking Barron questions that are on the minds of students, faculty, staff and community members.
