WPSU-TV will broadcast Penn State's 38th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Banquet at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28.The event was held in President’s Hall at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on Jan. 15.
The evening included a keynote address from Samuel C. Thompson Jr., director of the Center for the Study of Mergers and Acquisitions and professor at Penn State Dickinson School of Law, remarks from University President Rodney Erikson, and a performance from Essence of Joy.
Thompson’s speech focused on the history of slavery and segregation, as well as Martin Luther King’s dreams referenced from various speeches. One of the speeches referenced was King’s Jan. 21, 1965, speech at Rec Hall in front of 9,000 onlookers.
In addition, the Humanitarian Service Award was presented to Randall Robinson, distinguished scholar in residence at Penn State’s School of Law and School of International Affairs.
The 2013 event also honored area elementary, high school and Penn State students with awards and scholarships.The banquet was sponsored by the Forum on Black Affairs.
