ALTOONA, Pa. -- Poet John Hoppenthaler will offer a reading of his works as a kickoff to the Hard Freight Café open mic event at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, in the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts.
Hoppenthaler, associate professor of English at Eastern Carolina University, recently published a third book of poems, "Domestic Garden." His poetry has appeared in journals such as Ploughshares, Virginia Quarterly Review, and McSweeney’s Southern Review among others.
The poetry reading will be followed immediately by the Hard Freight Café open mic event. Attendees are invited to read or perform their own work, or share a favorite piece of poetry or prose.
The event, sponsored by the English program and Hard Freight, Penn State Altoona’s student literary magazine, is free and open to the public.
