UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State students, faculty and staff who want to test their creativity in the kitchen are invited to compete in a themed cake baking and decorating competition hosted by Penn State University Libraries from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, April 1, in Mann Assembly Room, 103 Paterno Library. Members of the public are encouraged to assist in the voting.

The Libraries’ 2019 Edible Book Festival, its third annual event, is part of a larger initiative, the International Edible Book Festival, held annually around April 1 to celebrate the birthday of French gastronome, author and attorney Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin. The festival, now celebrated in more than 23 countries around the world, encourages competitors to combine word play with books and food.

Bakers who wish to enter cakes for judging in the festival can sign up at http://tinyurl.com/psulibsediblebook, and must deliver cakes to Mann Assembly Room between 10 a.m. and noon on April 1. All cake submissions must have a book or reading theme, and all entries will be judged in five categories: people's choice, most creative, best depiction of a classic, funniest/punniest, and most appetizing. Winners in each category will receive a $10 gift card to Barnes & Noble.

The public is encouraged to attend the event to vote for their favorite submissions and enjoy a cupcake to celebrate the festival. Judging will occur at approximately 12:30 p.m. and prizes will be awarded at 1 p.m.
