UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- A diverse selection of work by Penn State School of Visual Arts students will be featured Sept. 4-28 at the Fraser Street Gallery in downtown State College in an exhibition titled "New Directions." The exhibition is curated by Brian Alfred, Penn State assistant professor of art. Alfred and gallery owner Maggie Wolszcan will be featured on WTAJ-TV’s "Central PA Live" on Thursday, Sept. 3, to discuss the exhibition.

According to Alfred, the exhibition will mainly feature paintings, as well as some ceramics and collages.

“It’s an eclectic group of students ranging from just accepted into the bachelor of fine arts program to a master of fine arts student. I selected artists who were really pushing new ideas and directions in their work — hence the exhibition title,” he said. “Students are naturally pretty diverse in their work. I took the idea of progressions and breakthroughs in the work as a core concept. These students have shown drive and ambition, and [the exhibition] is a chance for people to see a show of work that involves development and discovery.”

Alfred graduated from Penn State in 1997 and received his master’s degree from Yale University. His work is represented by Ameringer McEnery Yohe in New York City. He has shown internationally and is in the collections of the Guggenheim, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and many other institutions. He recently curated "Black/White" at Ameringer McEnery Yohe and "The Search For The Real" at DeBuck Gallery, both in New York City.

The Fraser Street Gallery is located at 123 Fraser Street. For more information, visit FraserStGallery.com.
