UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Join the Penn State Society for Indian Music and Arts on Sunday, Feb. 25, for “Songs of My Land,” an event celebrating the music and dance of various parts of India through performances by Penn State students, former and present, and by members of the Penn State community.
The event will begin at 3 p.m. in the Flex Theatre of the HUB-Robeson Center. Tickets are $8 for Penn State students, and $10 for general admission. Email sima.sandesh@gmail.com or call 484-725-3868 to reserve tickets.
The Society for Indian Music and Arts is a student organization dedicated to the preservation and propagation of traditional Indian performing art forms.
“Songs of My Land” will take participants on a journey of India, weaving together 13 pieces of regional music and dance. A land of dozens of languages and thousands of dialects, a cradle of civilization that arose five millennia ago, a vast people of many colors, creeds, beliefs, and ways of life; India's diversity flowers forth perhaps most exquisitely in its many art forms. In this land, ancient classical music and dance thrive harmoniously next to colorful folk traditions, and contemporary and experimental forms.
In addition, on April 6-8 the group will be a part of the annual Happy Valley Indian Performing Arts Festival, a three-day celebration of traditional Indian performing art forms. This weekend-long festival features professional artists who will bring three different forms of vocal and instrumental music, two forms of classical dance, and one form of folk dance-theater to the University Park campus.
