The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform its final concert of the school year at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, in Eisenhower Auditorium. The program features two movements of Eric Ewazen's "Hold Fast Your Dreams," performed with oboe soloist Noah Breneman, a co-winner of the 2017-18 Symphonic Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition. Audry Thompson, a second-year student in the graduate degree program in band/wind ensemble conducting, will conduct Grainger's "Children's March." The conductor of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble is Penn State director of concert bands Dennis Glocke.
Tickets are $12 for general admission and $4 for students. Buy tickets in advance for School of Music concerts in Eisenhower Auditorium and save 40 percent. There is no limit on the number. Purchases made the the day of the concert are not eligible. Noah Breneman is a senior oboe performance major. A student of Timothy Hurtz , he is a member of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Philharmonic Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra. He also performs with the Williamsport Symphony, the Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra, and the Nittany Valley Symphony. The son of Thomas and Angela Breneman from Reading, PA, Noah is the recipient of the Ouwehand Family Trustee Scholarship and the School of Music's Lynne D. Ferguson Memorial Award, A member of Pi Kappa Lambda, he has been a Dean's List student for six semesters. Noah achieved Jury Honors in fall 2015, fall 2016, and spring 2017; and Jury Recognition in spring 2016. He appeared as a soloist in the 2016 Mosaic concert and was also a featured performer in the 2017 Mosaic performance. Noah plans to pursue a graduate degree in oboe performance in fall 2018.
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is the premier wind/percussion ensemble in the School of Music. This highly select forty-member ensemble is comprised of the finest wind and percussion instrumentalists on campus. It performs a variety of repertoire ranging from chamber music to literature that utilizes the full ensemble. It concertizes extensively both on and off campus and is open to all students, regardless of major, by audition.
