What's happening at Penn State? Here's a look at some of the cultural events taking place at the University this weekend and in the coming week:
Performances
"Argonautika" — Oct. 24-Nov. 3, Pavilion Theatre. Penn State Centre Stage presents a modern take on "The Voyage of Jason and the Argonauts."
Yo-Yo Ma — 7:30 p.m., Nov. 3, Eisenhower Auditorium. Famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott will perform.
Penn State Glee Club — 7:30 p.m., Nov. 4, Worship Hall, Pasquerilla Spiritual Center. The glee club presents its annual fall concert.
"Faculty Artist Series" — 1 p.m., Nov. 5, Palmer Museum of Art. The Palmer Museum of Art will host a series of Sunday afternoon concerts while the School of Music facilities are undergoing construction and renovation. The weekly concerts will be held in the "BIG Deal" exhibition on the museum’s second floor. Faculty member Christopher Guzman will present a piano recital. Free.
Oriana Singers — 2 p.m., Nov. 5, Worship Hall, Pasquerilla Spiritual Center. The Oriana Singers will present their annual fall campus concert.
Cheat Codes — 8 p.m., Nov. 5, Alumni Hall, HUB-Robeson Center. Los Angeles-based electronic group Cheat Codes is this year's Homecoming concert. Free with a valid Penn State student ID.
"Macbeth" — Nov. 8-11, Perkins Student Center Auditorium, Penn State Berks. The Penn State Berks Theatre Department will present the Shakespearean classic.
Spanish Harlem Orchestra — 7:30 p.m., Nov. 9, Eisenhower Auditorium. The two-time Grammy-winning salsa and Latin jazz ensemble will perform.
Events
Transgender Visibility Month — Nov. 1-19, various locations. Penn State will join universities and communities across the country in celebrating Transgender Visibility Month, which is designed to increase awareness and advance advocacy for transgender and gender non-conforming people and the issues they face in their lives.
Tuscany to Sicily: A gastronomic journey — Nov. 2, Cafe Laura, Mateer Building. Students in HM 430 Advanced Food Production and Service Management prepare a series of themed dinners throughout the semester to be served in the student-run Cafe Laura restaurant. Reservations required.
Military Appreciation Week — Nov. 3-12, various locations. The Penn State and local community will join in honoring service members, veterans and their families; expressing appreciation to them; and recognizing the sacrifices of gold star families.
Sustainability Showcase — Noon, Nov. 3, third floor, Life Sciences Bridge. Lisa Iulo, associate professor in architecture, will present "NetZero Affordable Housing and Sustainable Architecture." Free.
Guest Masterclass — 3:30 p.m., Nov. 3, 112 Music Building I. Shenandoah Conservatory faculty violinist Doris Lederer will present a masterclass for Penn State viola students. Free.
Bellator MMA — 6:30 p.m., Nov. 3, Bryce Jordan Center. The mixed martial arts and kickboxing organization makes its debut at Penn State.
Homecoming 2017 — Nov. 5-11, various locations. Penn State celebrates its annual Homecoming with events including concerts, dance competitions, talent shows, a carnival, a parade and a football game featuring Penn State versus Rutgers. Most events free.

"Big Data and Fake News: Training Computers and Humans to Detect Misinformation by Combining Computational and Theoretical Analysis" — 1:30 p.m., Nov. 2, 233A HUB-Robeson Center. Dongwon Lee, associate professor in information sciences and technology, and S. Shyam Sundar, distinguished professor in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications, will discuss how their research on how machine learning may help to detect "fake news." Free.
"The Partisan Brain: The Science of Communication about Controversial Science" — 4:30 p.m., Nov. 2, Foster Auditorium, Paterno Library. Erik Nisbet, associate professor of communication, environmental policy and political science at Ohio State, will discuss the intersection of science and politics. Free.
2017 Steven and Janice Brose Distinguished Lecture Series — Nov. 2-4, Foster Auditorium, Pattee Library. Stephen Berry, Gregory Professor of the Civil War Era at the University of Georgia, will present three lectures on "The Death of Investigators: Coroners, Quants and the Birth of Death as We Know It." Free.
Satirist Bassam Youssef — Nov. 3-4. Satirist Bassem Youssef, dubbed the "Jon Stewart of Egypt," will deliver two lectures at Penn State. Free.
Former Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper — 5:30 p.m., Nov. 6, Sutliff Auditorium, Lewis Katz Building. The former Obama administration official will serve as the inaugural speaker for the new Center for Security Research and Education. Free.
2017 Nelson Mandela Lecture — 6 p.m., Nov. 7, Foster Auditorium, Paterno Library. Albert Sachs, retired judge in the Constitutional Court of South Africa and a freedom fighter against apartheid, will present "The Triumph of Humanity and Social Justice." Free.
"Defending Democratic Norms and a Free Press in the Trump Era" — 4 p.m., Nov. 8, 104 Keller Building. Jennifer Rubin, author of the Washington Post's Right Turn column, will discuss the media's role in holding the Trump administration accountable. Free.
Exhibits
"Field to Front: Nittany Lions at War, 1917-1919" — April 23, 2017-April 30, 2018, the Penn State All-Sports Museum. The exhibit chronicles the contributions of Nittany Lion lettermen during World War I and follows their service from training in the U.S. to fighting in France and Italy. Free.
"Asher B. Durand: To Begin Again" — Sept. 5-Dec. 10, Palmer Museum of Art. This exhibit focuses on the early career of this leading artist of the Hudson River School. Free.
"BIG Deal: Sizeable Paintings" — Sept. 5-Dec. 17, Palmer Museum of Art. The museum showcases some of its monumental canvases from its permanent collection, many of which have not been on view in recent years. Free.
"Minna Citron after Atelier 17" — Sept. 5-Dec. 10, Palmer Museum of Art. Four decades of printmaking by artist Minna Citron. Free.
"The History of Pattee Library and Paterno Library" — Oct. 3, 2017-Jan. 15, 2018, Pattee Library. This exhibit chronicles the University Libraries' 162-year history at University Park campus. Free.
"Skinnydipping" — Oct. 12-Nov. 4, Woskob Family Gallery, 146 S. Allen St., State College. "Skinnydipping" is an exhibition of two- and three-dimensional work that explores what it means to be a young American today. Free.
"Keith Lemley: A Theory of Everything" — Oct. 26, 2017-Sept. 30, 2018, Woskob Family Gallery, 146 S. Allen St., State College. Penn State alumnus and artist Keith Lemley will craft a new work that combines maple and neon and unify them through geometry and form. Free.
"They Have Names" — Nov. 3-Dec. 31, various locations at University Park campus and State College. The internationally recognized photo exhibit showcases the children of Syrian, Afghani and Iraqi refugees. Free.
