Upcycled art contest to show children how to create treasure from trash

Does your child enjoy creating things? Does he or she like using recycled “trash” and making it into a treasure? Penn State Shenango is gearing up for its inaugural Earth Fest Upcycled Art Contest, which is being held in conjunction with this year’s annual Earth Day event to be held on Saturday, April 9, at the downtown Sharon campus.

“Our campus Faculty Outreach Committee wanted to support this year’s Earth Fest event, while reaching out to the local school districts to get their students involved in upcycling,” stated Jen Jewell, instructor in physical therapy and chair of the Faculty Outreach Committee at Penn State Shenango. “We are hoping that the students who participate in this project will learn just how easy it is to reuse unwanted objects for new purposes.”

The art contest contains two categories: the first is a classroom project for grades kindergarten through sixth grade. Teachers who want their classroom to participate will need to have their students create one piece of artwork to be submitted as a class project. All materials in their artwork must have been previously used and/or potentially destined for recycling or the land fill.

The second category of the Upcycled Art Contest is titled “Reflection on Reuse.” This contest, which is also for children in kindergarten through sixth grade, requires students to work individually to create a two-dimensional (not to exceed 11” x 14”) or three-dimensional (not to exceed a 12” x 12” x 12”) piece of artwork using only material that has been previously used and/or potentially destined for recycling or the land fill.

All artwork entered into the contest will be displayed at the Penn State Shenango Earth Fest in the campus’ Art Gallery located in Sharon Hall 222 on April 9.

All submissions must include a completed entry form and dropped off with the students’ art project from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, April 1, in Lecture Hall room 222 located at 147 Shenango Ave., Sharon, Pennsylavnia.
