UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The winners of the 11th annual Materials Visualization Competition (MVC), a scientific visual and artistic competition sponsored by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) and the Materials Research Institute (MRI) at Penn State, have been announced. MVC celebrates the quality of research in materials at Penn State and promotes awareness of materials science through visualization.
Images were judged in three categories: scientific, visual and computation/modeling. Cash prizes were awarded to the first, second and third place winners in each category, and the best in show received $500. MVC winning entries may be viewed online.
The "Best of Show" award went to Woochul Song, graduate student in chemical engineering, for the entry, “Rounded membrane topology reminiscent of an abandoned alien planet covered in a blanket of ice."
The scientific category winners are:
- First place: Amy Goodling, materials science and engineering
- Second place: Caleb Meredith, materials science and engineering
- Third place: Xuexue Guo, electrical engineering
The visual category winners are:
- First place: Madhuri Dey, chemistry
- Second place: Xiaoxing Cheng, materials science and engineering
- Third place: Andrew Iams, materials science and engineering
The computation/modeling category winners are:
- First place: Collin Wilkinson, materials science and engineering
- Second place: Anna Madra, civil and environmental engineering; Mychal Spencer, aerospace engineering; and Namiko Yamamoto, aerospace engineering
- Third place: Weinan Chen, materials science and engineering
Entry is open to all Penn State undergraduates, graduates, post-docs and faculty working on materials-related topics. Call for submissions for the MVC12 will be posted early 2020.
