UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Woskob Family Gallery will debut its fall exhibition — an ambitious new wall drawing exploring the local landscape — on Sept. 6, with a reception from 5-8 p.m. Called "Folded Section," the work will be created over a two-week period by Assistant Teaching Professor of Landscape Architecture Alec Spangler and will be on view through Jan. 10, 2020.

"Folded Section" is a site-specific wall drawing that reimagines the local ridge and valley landscape. It will explore relationships between the bodily experience of long distances and representations of space in art and design.

“Since I arrived in State College as a new landscape architecture faculty member a year and a half ago, I’ve felt how strongly this place is defined by its physical shape — the ridge and the valley. Translating a bedrock section through Happy Valley as an intuitive drawing at a scale that has meaning for our day-to-day experience seemed like a perfect way for me to express and deepen that sense of place and to add another layer of understanding for myself and others,” said Spangler.

Using a visual vocabulary of pattern, texture and line, Spangler’s work brings to life an authentic piece of the geological landscape, allowing viewers an opportunity to explore details of bedrock and topographical elements, as well as their place within them.

“The gallery is delighted to present a piece that has such specific resonance for the local community. We envision 'Folded Section' as a unique new work of art as well as a tool for better understanding human relationships to the landscape,” said Ann Tarantino, director of the Woskob Family Gallery.
