UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The 2013 senior class of Penn State’s Musical Theatre Program performs a selection of broadway and pop tunes in this week’s broadcast premiere of WPSU’s "Music Theatre Spotlight." The program debuts at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 3, and includes solo and group numbers from all 12 members of this past spring’s graduating class. It will repeat at 7 and 11 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6.

The annual production, in its seventh year, provides the opportunity for students to showcase their talents in a television studio setting in front of a live audience. Penn State’s bachelor of fine arts program in musical theatre is a challenging program that strengthens students’ singing, dancing and acting skills in order to make them viable candidates in the field of performing arts.

“It’s been really amazing to see the success of Penn State’s musical theatre program, and I hope that this television show plays a small part in that,” said Jeff Hughes, producer/director of "Music Theatre Spotlight."

Students’ participation in the production adds a unique component to their professional portfolios, Hughes explained. Additionally, their performances, posted to YouTube, often attract the attention of casting agents.

Alumni of "Music Theatre Spotlight" have landed roles in Broadway shows and other well-known productions.

“A number of them of have said that this show was a major consideration in their decision to come to Penn State,” said Hughes. “As a performer, it’s very valuable to them to be involved in a professional broadcast production.”

"Music Theatre Spotlight 2012" received a Mid-Atlantic Emmy nomination in the entertainment category.
