Penn State Abington head coach David Castellanos’ deep and broad experience in youth, collegiate and professional soccer has transformed Abington’s program and its players. Now the campus' student-athletes will benefit from his additional experience coaching the minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Union major league soccer team.
In addition to his role leading the Abington soccer teams, Castellanos was named head coach of Reading United A.C. in Berks County for the 2014 season. Reading plays its games in early summer.
“David’s playing experience combined with his well-established coaching pedigree, form a perfect balance,” said Reading United President Art Auchenbach.
As a student, Castellanos played on the 2000 University of Connecticut NCAA Division I national championship team and several U.S. national youth teams. The bilingual Castellanos turned professional in Central America with the Honduras National Professional Football League, and he also played with pro teams in Colorado, Minnesota and Virginia. He moved indoors with Philadelphia’s major indoor soccer league and was a member of their league championship team.
Castellanos also coaches three youth teams at a Philadelphia Union Youth Academy Partner Club.
At Abington, Castellanos’ men’s team holds an 80-58-12 record, and he is the winningest coach in the women’s program's history with a 61-49-5 record.
