Greater Allegheny athletics off to a strong start

Athletics at Penn State Greater Allegheny are off to a strong start for the 2013-14 year. The Penn State Greater Allegheny men's soccer team scored five goals against Penn State Schuylkill on Sunday to take their first conference win of the season.  Two of the goals were scored by sophomore forward Ghana Phuyel. First-year student goaltender Michael Anderson faced 12 shots on goal, stopping nine of them. The Greater Allegheny Lions were able to take 31 shots on Schuylkill's defense, contributing to the win.Greater Allegheny’s next match will be at Westmoreland County Community College at 5 p.m. Thursday.In cross-country, first-year student Rachel Ramsey opened up the 2013-14 season by not only finishing first in the third annual Westmoreland County Community College Cross-Country Invitational but also setting a new course record with a time of 20:53.Another strong competitor for the women's team was first-year student Kasey Dansak, who went on to set a personal best time of 24:51. Sophomore returner Rob Meier had a solid turnout by placing fifth for the men's team, completing the run in 18:30.Greater Allegheny women's and men's cross-country teams are set to host an invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14.
