UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Two members of the Penn State women’s golf team began play Monday, Aug. 1, in the U.S. Women’s Amateur, which is being held near their hometowns at the Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pennsylvania.

Jackie Rogowicz, a rising sophomore, and Maddy Herr, an incoming freshman, are participating in the prestigious event. Rogowicz, a native of Yardley, shot a 1-over-par 72 during the first round, tied for 36th.

During her freshman campaign, Rogowicz averaged a 74.3. Her best score of the season was an even par 216 at the Pinehurst Invitational, and she was selected Big Ten Golfer of the Week after her first collegiate event, shooting a one-over-par 217, finishing second overall, to lead Penn State to the team victory at the Nittany Lion Invitational.

A product of New Hope, Herr shot a 75 during her opening round. The runner-up in the 2015 Pennsylvania Women's Amateur Championship, Herr was ranked the No. 75 player nationally in the 2015-16 recruiting class. She also was a semifinalist in the inaugural U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball in 2015.

The U.S. Amateur will include 36 holes of stroke play qualifying Monday and Tuesday, followed by match play for the top 64 golfers from Wednesday through Sunday. A total of 156 golfers are participating in the championship at the 6,259-yard, par 71 course in suburban Philadelphia.
