Penn State Behrend pitcher sets career strikeout record

ERIE, Pa. — Pitcher Jack Herzing set a Penn State Behrend record for career strikeouts, with 257. Herzing, a senior from St. Marys, fanned the first nine batters in a game against Alfred State. He struck out 16 before the game ended.

The college’s softball, tennis, track and field, and water polo teams also were in action last week. Here are the highlights:

Katie Gozzard, a junior from Pittsburgh, earned her 100th career hit in the nightcap against Pitt-Greensburg. AJ Nichols, a junior from Pittsburgh, pitched six scoreless innings in the early game. She struck out seven batters.

Men’s track and field

Fourth (of 22 teams) at the Westminster Invitational

Grant Rodgers, a sophomore from Oil City, set a school record in the 400-meter run, finishing in 48.96 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay team — Rodgers, Greg Graf, Colton Barger and Devin Ross — won its race, finishing in 3:21.97.

Women’s track and field

Thirteenth (of 20 teams) at the Westminster Invitational

Rachel Pell, a senior from Elizabeth, ran a season-best time in the 400-meter race, finishing in 64.83 seconds.

Men’s tennis

Franciscan 9, Penn State Behrend 0

Allegheny 8, Penn State Behrend 1

The Lions secured the No. 2 seed for the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament. The team will play in the conference semifinals on April 21.

Women’s water polo

Penn State Behrend 10, Grove City 5

Connecticut College 10, Penn State Behrend 5

Penn State Behrend 9, Monmouth 8

The Lions finished the season with eight wins, their most since the Penn State Behrend program began. Maryn Horn, a senior from Houston, Texas, and Devon Van Rensburg, a freshman from Johannesburg, South Africa, each scored a hat trick against Grove City.
