ROSEMONT, Ill. — Penn State men’s soccer seniors Connor Maloney and Robby Sagel, along with freshman Pierre Reedy, collected Big Ten individual honors, as announced by the conference office Nov. 4.
Maloney was a unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selection, earning the honor for the third time in his career, while Sagel earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors and Reedy was a unanimous pick to the All-Freshman team.
Maloney paced the Nittany Lions for the third-straight season, notching 19 points with a team-high seven goals and five assists. The senior midfielder posted 1,438 minutes on the pitch in 16 starts and carries a .414 shots on goal percentage into the tournament. Maloney’s seven goals and 0.44 goals per game rank fourth in the Big Ten, while his five assists rank fifth in conference standings. The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, native was one of three players on Penn State to record a multi-goal match after scoring twice against No. 22 Akron, earning him Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Sagel was a staple in the Nittany Lion backline, helping Penn State to five shutouts in the 2016 season. The senior defender played in and started all 17 matches for the Nittany Lions for a team-high 1,622 minutes on the pitch. Furthermore, Sagel scored the game-winning goal against then-No. 19 Michigan State in double overtime to help start a five-match Nittany Lion unbeaten streak.
In his first season donning the Blue and White, Reedy was one-of-three players to start all 17 matches for the Nittany Lions. The freshman found his touch in the final three matches of the season recording two assists and one goal. The Kutztown, Pennsylvania, native recorded 1,316 minutes on the field and put 10 shots on goal in the 2016 campaign.
Additionally, Ryan Gallagher earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for Penn State. The Pine Brush, New York, native started the final six matches of the season for the Blue and White and saw action in nine games in 2016. Gallagher had two shots in 612 minutes of action and helped anchor the backline in three shutouts.
Penn State heads to East Lansing, Michigan, for the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 6, when it takes on Michigan State at 1 p.m. The match will be featured on BTN Plus and live stats will be available through MSUSpartans.com.
