Carillon Concert at Penn State Behrend Oct. 8
5:30 PM - 6:30 PM / October 08, 2022
The 2022 Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Behrend will conclude with a special duet recital by Frank DellaPenna and Lisa Lonie on Saturday, Oct. 8. The performance, which begins at 5:30 p.m., is open to the public at no charge. Seating will be available outside Smith Chapel and in the chapel’s living room, where a video feed will show the performers.
The Smith Carillon at Penn State Behrend is a 48-bell instrument hung in a steel framework. Performers strike clappers with a loose fist, activating a system of levers and counter springs that are connected to a clavier.
The largest of the bells in the Smith Chapel Carillon weighs 1,344 pounds and has a 40-inch diameter.
DellaPenna and Lonie will perform a series of duets written or arranged for carillon. Their performance will include the “Game of Thrones” theme and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
DellaPenna is the former resident carillonneur of the Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge. He has performed at more than 15,000 music, art and Renaissance festivals, and was featured at the World Carillon Congress in Zutphen in the Netherlands.
Lonie has served as the carillonneur at Princeton University since 2012. She was a guest carillonneur at the 2002 National Convention of the American Guild of Organists and was featured at the World Carillon Federation Congress in Aschaffenburg, Germany.
