The new second-degree nursing program at Penn State Behrend is a fast-tracked, 16-month option for college graduates who are considering a career change. Classes will begin in the fall of 2026.
The program is designed to help medical providers in the Erie region meet their staffing needs: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 6% from 2021 to 2031. That will create approximately 203,200 openings each year over the decade.
“Health care and social services are the largest component of the Erie workforce,” Chancellor Ralph Ford said. “There is opportunity here, and the accelerated pace and focused curriculum of the second-degree option in nursing is ideal for graduates who want to refocus or reorient their career path without starting over.”
The nursing programs at Penn State Behrend are offered through the Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing. Two virtual info sessions on Thursday, Nov. 6, will allow interested students to learn more about the second-degree program. Programs will be offered at noon and 6 p.m. Details, and links to register, are at the Behrend nursing page.
