The Oscar Peňas Quartet will perform a free concert at Penn State Behrend when the Rhythms of Life Series resumes on Oct. 12. The performance, which begins at noon in Bruno’s Café, is free and open to the public.

Peňas, a classical and jazz guitarist, was born in Barcelona. He was raised with folk and flamenco music, listening to his grandfather, who played trumpet in the Xavier Cugat Orchestra.

Peňas has collaborated with several American jazz masters, including Esperanza Spalding, Gil Goldstein, Paquito D’Rivera and Ron Carter. He has performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center and has been a featured performer at the BAM Next Wave Festival and the International Jazz Plaza Festival in Cuba.
