Smith Carillon Concert Series

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM / July 20, 2023

The Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Behrend will continue July 20 with a performance by Janet Tebbel. The 7 p.m. concert is free and open to the public, with seating on the Smith Chapel lawn. Guests should bring a blanket or chair.

Tebbel is the carillonneur of two carillons in the historic Germantown section of Philadelphia: the 50-bell Taylor carillon at First United Methodist Church, where she has performed since 1979, and the 47-bell Paccard/Bigelow carillon at Miraculous Medal Shrine, where she has performed since 2002. She has performed throughout North America and Europe and has been a member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America since 1974.

The Smith Carillon – one of just 166 in the United States – was installed in 2002. The smallest of the 48 bells weighs 15 pounds; the largest weighs 1,344 pounds.

No springs, levers or electronics are used in a carillon. The carillonneur, who sits in a small room at the top of the bell tower, strikes the bells by hitting a keyboard-like clavier with a loose fist. The larger bells are struck with a foot pedal.
