Behrend cross country teams win AMCC championships

ERIE, Pa. — Penn State Behrend’s cross country teams won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championships, running on their home course on Nov. 1. Both teams advance to the NCAA Regionals on Nov. 15.

Lindsey Hartle, a senior from Pittsburgh, won the women’s race, completing the 6K course in 25:55.2. She was four seconds faster than last year’s champion.

Ethan Vaughan, a freshman from Pittsburgh, placed third in the men’s race. He completed the 8K course in 28:21.5.

Behrend’s soccer, volleyball, swimming and diving, wrestling, bowling and water polo teams also were in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:

Men’s soccer

  • Penn State Behrend 3, Alfred State 1

Owen Petersen, a junior from Erie, scored in the 55th minute. He also had an assist. The Lions clinched the AMCC regular-season title and earned a first-round bye in the postseason tournament.

Women’s soccer

  • Penn State Behrend 6, Alfred State 0

Marlene Andrade, a junior from Walnut Creek, California, scored two goals and had an assist. The Lions clinched the AMCC regular-season title and earned a first-round bye in the postseason tournament.

Women’s volleyball

  • Penn State Altoona 3, Penn State Behrend 0
  • Penn State Behrend 3, Alfred State 0

Cadence Jones, a sophomore from North East, led the Lions with 14 kills and 15 digs against Penn State Altoona. Brynne Smith, a sophomore from Butler, had 37 assists and 10 digs.

Men’s swimming and diving

  • Penn State Behrend 147, Pitt-Bradford 64

Anthony Tumino, a senior from Hershey, won the 100 freestyle, finishing in 49.50. Ryan Okey, a sophomore from Erie, won the 400 IM, finishing in 4:42.36. Both also swam in the 200 medley relay, which the Lions won in 1:45.31.

Women’s swimming and diving

  • Penn State Behrend 123, Pitt-Bradford 36

Kallie Smith, a sophomore from Oil City, won the 400 IM, finishing in 4:49.64. She also swam a leg of the 200 medley relay, which the Lions won in 1:58.66. Amanda Sperandio, a freshman from Monongahela, won the one-meter diving event, finishing with a score of 129.35.

Wrestling

Mason Savitz, a freshman from Corry, won the 165-pound weight class at the Lycoming Invitational. He won three bouts, including the championship match, by pin. He won a fourth match by decision, 3-1.

Angelique Gadsky, a junior from Salinas, California, bowled a 255 against Bryant at the two-day Niagara Brunswick Fall Open. Dee Dee Elijah, a sophomore from Tallmadge, Ohio, bowled a 229 against Hilbert.

Men’s water polo

  • Gannon 19, Penn State Behrend 17
  • Mercyhurst 13, Penn State Behrend 11

Nick Thompson, a sophomore from Hudsonville, Michigan, scored seven goals against Gannon. Ryan Carpico, a senior from Skippack, scored three.
