Monday, Jan. 17

Noon, McGarvey Commons

The Office of Educational Equity and Diversity Programs will host a conversation with Philonise Floyd, the brother of George Floyd, who was killed by police during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020. Floyd will participate in a moderated Q&A with students from the Association of Black Collegians, the Multi-Cultural Council and the Student Government Association.

This program will coincide with the annual Campus Family Brunch.

Behrend students and others are invited to participate in service projects that will benefit the local community. Volunteers will tie blankets for the U.S. Commission for Refugees and Immigrants, which is supporting new refugees from Afghanistan, and will contribute to an art beautification project for Pfeiffer-Burleigh Elementary School.

This program, which is sponsored by the Office of Civic and Community Engagement, is part of the college’s annual MLK Day of Service.

Wednesday, Jan. 19

Noon and 5 p.m., Reed Auditorium

The Office of Educational Equity and Diversity Programs will sponsor two screenings of the documentary film “At the River I Stand: The Climax of the Civil Rights Movement.” The film reconstructs the Memphis sanitation workers strike, which brought Martin Luther King Jr. to Memphis shortly before his death. King had come to the city to meet with striking workers, who were fighting for better wages and safer working conditions. He was killed the next day.
