Behrend women's team wins AMCC swimming championship

The Penn State Behrend women’s swimming and diving team won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title, its first since the 2018-19 season. Two swimmers – Marcella Puglia and Barbie Cessar – end their collegiate careers as three-time champions in individual events.

The men’s team placed second.

Here are the highlights from Behrend’s other teams last week:

Men’s basketball

  • Penn State Behrend 63, Penn State Altoona 60
  • La Roche 64, Penn State Behrend 59

Kenny Fukon, a senior from Cranberry Township, scored 16 points against Penn State Altoona. Matt Niland, a junior from Erie, scored 14. The Lions will host the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament.

Women’s basketball

  • La Roche 78, Penn State Behrend 68
  • Kara Haslett, a senior from Baden, scored 15 points in the loss to La Roche. Caitlin Carnuche, a senior from New Castle, scored 14.

 

Men’s volleyball

  • Penn State Behrend 3, Hilbert 0
  • Penn State Behrend 3, Mt. Union 0

JP Goodsel, a graduate student from Corry, had 11 kills against Mt. Union. Setter Alex Jackson, a sophomore from Cochranton, had 20 assists.

Men’s swimming and diving

  • Second (of six teams) at the AMCC Championships

Tim Compton, a freshman from Pittsburgh, won the 200 butterfly, finishing in 1:53.39. He was named the Allegheny Empire Championship Men’s Swimmer of the Meet. Jacob Eshelman, a junior from Franklin, won the 200 breaststroke, finishing in 2:10.26.

Women’s swimming and diving

  • First (of six teams) at the AMCC Championships

Marcella Puglia, a senior from Beaver Falls, won the 1,650 freestyle, finishing in 18:38.67. Emma Webster, a sophomore from Bradford, won the 200 backstroke, finishing in 2:11.36. Barbie Cessar, a senior from Slippery Rock, won the 200 breaststroke, finishing in 2:29.42.

Men’s track and field

Antonio Stello, a senior from Punxsutawney, won the 60-meter dash at the Conference Tune-Up in Rochester, New York, finishing in 7.06 seconds. Ryan Festa, a sophomore from Horsham, placed second in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.40 meters. Both qualified for the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference Championships.

Women’s track and field

Olivia Nola, a freshman from Erie, placed third in the mile run at the Conference Tune-Up in Rochester, New York. She finished in 5:23.05. She placed sixth in the 3,000-meter race, finishing in 11:08.16.

Men’s volleyball

  • Penn State Behrend 3, Thiel 0
  • Penn State Behrend 3, Mt. Aloysius 0

Diego Ortiz, a junior from San Juan, Puerto Rico, had 22 assists and nine digs against Thiel. JP Goodsel, a graduate student from Corry, had 14 kills.

Men’s tennis

  • Otterbein 9, Penn State Behrend 0

Jonathon Laier, a freshman from Lansing, Michigan, and Mitchell May, a junior from Erie, lost by an 8-5 decision at No. 1 doubles.

Women’s tennis

  • Otterbein 9, Penn State Behrend 0

Rachel Weber, a junior from Allison Park, won four game points at No. 3 singles.

Wrestling

  • Pitt-Bradford 41, Penn State Behrend 12

Joe Newara, a senior from Harborcreek, won by pin in the heavyweight match. The win was his 13th pin of the season.

Women’s water polo

  • Siena 16, Penn State Behrend 5
  • McKendree 28, Penn State Behrend 5
  • Mount St. Mary’s 24, Penn State Behrend 5

Samantha Darrell, a freshman from Perkasie, scored two goals against McKendree. Olivia Wright, a sophomore from Fairview, scored twice against Mount St. Mary’s.
