Alumnus to discuss award-winning NFL Films career and recent book

Free public session featuring Bob Angelo set for Sept. 26 in Foster Auditorium of Paterno Library

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A Penn State alumnus who crafted an award-winning longtime career at NFL Films will present a free public lecture titled “The NFL Off Camera” at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 26 in Foster Auditorium of Paterno Library on the University Park campus.

Bob Angelo — who earned his bachelor’s degree in from the University in 1974 and worked for NFL Films, the documentary-style storytelling arm of the NFL, from 1975 to 2018 — will discuss his 43-year career and recent book, "The NFL Off-Camera: An A–Z Guide to the League's Most Memorable Players and Personalities," during the event.

During his more than four decades with NFL Films, Angelo covered 40 Super Bowls and earned 21 national Sports Emmy Awards.

He started what he describes as his “dream job” with NFL Films on June 16, 1975, and retired on Feb. 16, 2018. Angelo wrote, edited, produced, directed and shot hundreds of TV shots and sports segments. He interviewed thousands of NFL players, coaches, front office personnel, media types and more. He shot a hand-held sideline camera at more than 850 NFL games.

Angelo, who earned his master’s degree at Northwestern University, later taught sports production courses at the University of Delaware and in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State.
